Heard on the radio earlier today and then looked at my F1 App. Wow !! Didn’t expect to read that this morning. I got to shake this guys hand at a Vancouver Indy car race in the late 90s and honestly felt I had met one of MY hero’s. Had to wonder what is he doing at an Indycar race? Me,like Murray years ago with Mark Donohue so close. Was utterly speechless. Lol.
The guy was literally a Phoenix. Very unliked in his early F1 days he earned the nickname of “The Rat”, he was given the last rites in a German hospital after his fiery crash at the Nurburgring in 1976,he came back after 6 weeks and only lost the WDC to James Hunt after stopping his car at Suzuka in torrential rain. One of the true racers. Grumpier and miserable as all hell but a true racer in the best years of Formula 1.
One of F1’s best looking cars from 1984. The Maclaren MP4/2 TAG Porsche. 811 BHP for qualifying out of a 1500 CC V6 Turbo. Sweet sound this car made under full throttle. RIP Niki.
The 1976 crash where his helmet came off and he sat in flames for 50 seconds before Brett Lunger and Arturo Mezario leap into the flames to release the harness and pull him free according to a biography.
