Yes. They had amazing traction. My dad built me a set of bolt on wheel spacers for the rear and mounted dual wheels on it. I had to bury it in a swamp to get stuck.....which I was still able to do occasionally... lol...
Sorry about your friend but must have been one hell of a bump. I've had 3 of them and did a lot of off road. Never had a problem and I for sure didn't baby them over bumps. Never heard of a Bug suspension collapsing going over a bump before.... Sounds like worn out shocks or struts to me.
